Rooftop solar installation peaks in Australia

Rooftop solar installation Australia

2020 witnessed a tremendous increase in rooftop solar PV installations in Australia. Though the COVID 19 pandemic hit the renewable energy market in early 2020, there has been continued growth after April 2020, culminating in a tremendous 2.66 million residential and commercial installations by the end of the year.

Record in renewable energy capacity

Australia has achieved a record in renewable energy capacity as per the report by Clean Energy Regulator (CER). Factors that drive uptake of solar power in Australia are a desire in households for energy independence, environmental concerns, and the work-from-home trend.

Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor said Australia has the highest uptake of solar in the world with one in four homes using it and the highest wind and solar capacity compared to any other non-European countries.
“In 2019, Australia deployed new renewable capacity at least 10 times faster per person than the global average and four times faster per person than China, Europe or the United States,” Mr. Taylor said that, “In 2020, Australia invested $7.7 billion or $299 per person in renewable energy. This places us ahead of countries like Canada, Germany, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and the United States on a per-person basis.”

PV capacity and installations

Compared to 2019, there is an 11% hike in renewable energy installation in 2020. The previous year’s record of 6.3 GW is overrun by a 7.0 GW installation in 2020. 53.6 TWh of electricity was generated into the National Electricity Market (NEM) which is 16% more than the previous year. By the final quarter of 2020, the share of renewables in the NEM exceeded 30%.
CER’s report is strengthened by the Australian Energy Council’s (AEC) latest Solar Report confirming record growth in solar PV capacity and installations during 2020.

According to AEC’s report, an additional 2.6 GW and 333,978 installations were done in 2020 which is about 18% higher than 2019 which had 2.2GW with 284,000 installations.

New South Wales ranks first among Australian states for new installations. They had 36% increase in new installed capacity, adding 208 MW to the NEM while Western Australia had 24% increase in new installed capacity, adding 60 MW to the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM), with a 22% increase in new installations.

The AEC said 2020 also marked a strong year for home battery installations with rooftop solar PV systems. Though Queensland bagged first place with 32% of the market last year, this year it was overtaken by South Australia with 42% of the market share.

Australia’s future plan

By 2030, Australia plans to triple its small-scale solar generating capacity by deploying an additional 24 GW of rooftop solar. With more than 25,000 solar installations in Australia, Regen Power is not a small residential company but has bigger capabilities. It has a strong partnership with mining giants like BHP Billiton, BC Iron. Quality of products and services, affordable pricing, continued innovation, futuristic approach are the key components of our success. That’s the only reason why we are still in business even after 17 years. Premium panels, best quality installation and customer service is of utmost importance for Regen Power.
